Gillian Hawker
Dr. Hawker is a a Professor of Medicine, Division of Rheumatology at the University of Toronto and Physician-in-Chief of Medicine at Women's College Hospital, where she is the F. M. Hill Chair in Academic Women's Medicine.
She is a health services researcher whose research focus has been on improving access to and outcomes for community living individuals with two common conditions of aging, osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. She is a recipient of The Arthritis Society’s Senior Distinguished Rheumatologist Investigator Award for her research in osteoarthritis, which has documented substantial disparities in access to total joint replacement surgery by gender and socioeconomic status among Canadians.
She has been a passionate advocate for improved care for people with musculoskeletal conditions and is a founding member of ACAP, the Alliance for a Canadian Arthritis Plan, and, under the auspices of ACAP, Co-Chaired the 2005 Ottawa Summit to set Standards for Arthritis Prevention and Care. She is currently a member of the American College of Rheumatology’s Quality of Care Committee and of the Performance Measurement Advisory Board of the Ontario Health Quality Council, and serves on the Board of the International Society for Osteoarthritis Research.
